How to Best Plan the Arrangement of a Baby Crib?

A baby crib is one of the key pieces of furniture we consider first when planning a nursery. Since newborns spend most of their time sleeping, the sleeping area must be carefully planned to ensure both safety and comfort for the child and parents alike. Creating a dedicated space for a newborn in the parents' bedroom is the most popular and practical solution in the early stages of a child's life. Where to place the crib and how to create a cozy and safe space for the baby in the bedroom? Check out the tips below.

Now that you've found the perfect crib for your newborn, it's time to set it up in the right place! Below are four tips that will help you with this.

1.      Closer to the Parents!

A newly born child requires special care, so it's best to place the crib in the parents' bedroom. This facilitates convenient feeding, changing, and soothing of the baby, providing comfort and closeness for parents during the night. A bedside crib is an excellent solution, especially in the first few weeks after birth, as it:

·         Facilitates breastfeeding while lying down.

·         Takes up less space than a standard crib.

·         Provides closeness to the parents and a sense of security.

·         Allows for constant monitoring of the baby's breathing, enabling immediate response to their needs without leaving the bed.

·         Eliminates the need to get out of bed multiple times during the night.

·         Provides the baby with their own safe space, especially when using a cocoon.

2.      Proper Placement in Relation to Doors, Windows, and Radiators.

When deciding on the placement of the crib, it's important to consider the distance from the window, radiator, and doors. There are several reasons for this:

·         Placing the crib too close to the door may expose the baby to drafts, noise, and light from other rooms. Additionally, frequent opening and closing of doors may accidentally wake the baby from sleep.

·         Sleeping near a window may lead to sleep disturbances, especially if the windows are not properly sealed and allow noise from outside to enter. However, if you must place the crib here, ensure the baby is appropriately dressed to maintain a comfortable temperature.

·         Positioning the crib next to a radiator, especially when it's on, can be hazardous. Dry air and excessive heat in winter can negatively affect the baby's respiratory system and disrupt sleep comfort.

3.      Remove Unnecessary Items and Shelves above the Crib.

It's best when the crib contains only essential items, such as a mattress, fitted sheet, baby sleeping bag, or baby nest for the youngest infants. Other items are unnecessary and may pose a risk. Items such as computers, televisions, heavy curtains, canopies, and excessive toys and decorations that collect dust should be removed. It's also not recommended to have shelves or heavy decorations above the crib to prevent accidental dropping of items onto the sleeping baby. However, it's advisable to have a changing table, feeding chair, organizer, and night light nearby for convenience and functionality.

4.      Ensure Easy Access to the Baby Crib.

When setting up the crib in the bedroom, it's essential to ensure easy access from three sides. The space around the crib should be clear to avoid squeezing through other furniture. This not only makes it easier to take the baby out of the crib but also helps avoid back strain. Leaving one side of the crib free allows you to hang a functional organizer for essential items such as diapers, wipes, diaper cream, and pacifiers. A bedside crib can be an excellent solution, especially if space is limited in the room. It's typically smaller and lighter than standard cribs, and many models also have wheels, making it easy to move and gently rock, providing additional comfort for the baby.
